Range is the first question anyone asks about an electric van, and it matters even more when the van has a fridge to run. Ford answered it in 2024 with an extended-range E-Transit, and it is now on sale: an 89kWh battery, up to 402km (about 250 miles) WLTP, 22kW AC and 180kW DC charging.
What Ford announced
Ford showed the extended-range E-Transit at the 2024 Commercial Vehicle Show. These are Ford’s own figures:
- Battery: 89kWh, up from 68kWh on the standard E-Transit.
- Range: up to 402km (about 250 miles) on the WLTP test, 27% more than before.
- Home and depot charging: 22kW AC, double the previous 11kW.
- Rapid charging: 180kW DC, up from 115kW. Ford quotes 10 to 80% in about 28 minutes, and up to 116km (72 miles) of range from a 10-minute charge.
- Also new: a heat pump to help range in cold weather, and a two-year, unlimited-mileage service interval.
It is on sale now.
What it means for a fridge van
A bigger battery takes away some of the worry, but a fridge van is not a bare van. The insulated lining and the refrigeration unit add weight, and the fridge needs power to hold temperature, so the range you’ll see with a full load on a hot day will be less than the brochure figure. Faster charging helps here: a top-up at lunchtime goes further than it used to.
Before you choose any electric fridge van, work out your longest day: the miles, the number of drops, how long the doors are open and whether the van sits loaded overnight. If it parks up loaded, ask for electric standby when you order, because it can’t be added after the conversion. See do you need electric standby?
Electric fridge vans from us
We have the electric Mercedes eSprinter MWB in stock as a chiller and as a freezer (October 2026), and we can source and convert other electric vans to order. Fully electric vans meet the London ULEZ standard, and the government’s plug-in van grant takes up to £5,000 off the price of some large electric vans (the seller applies it as a discount). The scheme is funded to at least April 2027, and the government says it can close without notice.
