Hire purchase or finance lease

Two ways to pay, explained simply.

Not sure which suits you? Here’s the difference.

Own it at the end

Hire purchase

Get a new or used refrigerated van in return for regular payments over a set period.

The basics

  • You pay the full VAT up front and claim it back in the normal way
  • VAT is not charged on the monthly payments
  • The van becomes yours at the end

Benefits

  • You keep 100% of any future sale proceeds
  • Negotiable deposit
  • You claim the capital allowances on the van yourself
  • Usually leaves your other borrowing, such as a bank overdraft, untouched
  • Your payments are fixed from day one
  • Secured on the van being financed, so no need for additional security
  • You know exactly what you have to pay and when, so you can plan ahead and stay in control
Pay for use, not ownership

Finance lease

You take the van and use it, new or used, in return for regular rentals. At the end, you can keep paying a small yearly amount to keep using the van, or the van is sold for you.

The basics

  • You look after maintenance, repair, service and insurance
  • VAT is payable on the lease rentals as they fall due
  • After the term you can keep using the van for a small yearly rental
  • Or the van is sold for you, and you keep up to 95% of the price it sells for

Benefits

  • Less need to tie up capital in fixed assets
  • Use a new or used refrigerated van with minimal capital outlay
  • Usually leaves your other borrowing, such as a bank overdraft, untouched
  • The lease period can be matched to the expected life of the van
  • Rentals are normally an allowable business expense (your accountant can confirm)
  • Simple and quick to arrange, so you can concentrate on your business

Side by side, at a glance.

Both are subject to status. Prices +VAT.

Who owns the van?

You do. The van becomes yours at the end.

The finance company. You pay to use it.

How does VAT work?

Paid in full up front and claimed back in the normal way. No VAT on the monthly payments.

VAT is payable on each rental as it falls due.

Tax

You claim the capital allowances on the van yourself.

Rentals are normally an allowable business expense (your accountant can confirm).

At the end

The van is yours, and you keep 100% of any future sale proceeds.

Keep it for a small yearly payment, or have it sold for you and keep up to 95% of the price.

Your bank credit lines

Usually unaffected.

Usually unaffected.

What's the difference between hire purchase and a finance lease?

With hire purchase, the van is yours at the end. With a finance lease you pay to use the van, and the finance company stays the owner.

How much deposit do I need?

Finance is available from a £500 +VAT deposit, subject to status. On hire purchase the deposit is negotiable.

Who can get finance?

Our finance is for business customers, subject to status. We are a credit broker, not a lender, and introduce you to a number of lenders. Call us on 01444 245555 to talk it through.

How does VAT work?

On hire purchase you pay the full VAT up front and claim it back in the normal way, and VAT is not charged on the monthly payments. On a finance lease, VAT is payable on the lease rentals as they fall due.

What happens at the end of a finance lease?

You can keep using the van for a small yearly payment, or have it sold for you and keep up to 95% of the price it sells for.

Who looks after the van on a finance lease?

You do. On a finance lease the customer is responsible for maintenance, repair, service and insurance.

What about capital allowances and tax?

On hire purchase you claim the capital allowances on the van yourself. Finance lease rentals are normally an allowable business expense; your accountant can confirm.

Will it affect my credit lines with the bank?

Usually not. Both hire purchase and a finance lease normally leave your other borrowing, such as a bank overdraft, untouched: the agreement is secured on the van itself. Your lender or accountant can confirm.

Can I get finance on a van and its conversion together?

Yes. When you buy the van and the conversion from us, one finance agreement covers both.

Do you take part exchange?

Yes, part exchange is welcome. Add your reg and mileage to your finance enquiry above.
