Do I need an ATP certificate?

Probably not. If your fridge van only works in the UK, ATP isn’t a legal requirement. It matters when your food crosses an international border.

What ATP is

ATP is a United Nations agreement on the international carriage of perishable food. It sets the temperatures food must be carried at, how refrigerated vehicles are tested and approved, the paperwork you carry and the markings on the outside of the vehicle (GOV.UK).

It covers foods such as meat, poultry, fish, milk, fresh dairy and ready-cooked food. Unprocessed fresh fruit and vegetables are not covered.

When you need one

You need ATP approval when you carry perishable food to or from a country that has signed the agreement. Those include France, Germany and Ireland. Carrying food across a border without the right approval is illegal, and you can be fined by the authorities in those countries.

UK-only work

If you only deliver within the UK, there is no legal requirement for ATP. The UK’s ATP test centre says so plainly: ATP is not required within the UK, only when crossing international borders (Cambridge Refrigeration Technology). GOV.UK says different rules apply if you only carry perishable food within the UK.

Those different rules are the food hygiene ones. Chilled food must be kept at 8°C or below in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and your van must be able to hold it there. See transporting food in your refrigerated van.

Some UK operators choose ATP-approved vans anyway, as a quality standard, and some customers ask for it. That’s a commercial choice, not the law, so ask before you pay for one.

Northern Ireland to the Republic

Ireland is an ATP country, so a run from Northern Ireland into the Republic is an international journey. How that plays out in practice for a small van on a regular cross-border round is something we haven’t been able to confirm from official guidance. Check with the Department for Transport or Cambridge Refrigeration Technology before you start that work.

How you get a certificate

In Great Britain, ATP tests and certificates are handled by Cambridge Refrigeration Technology, the test centre GOV.UK sends you to. Vehicles are tested to show the insulated body and the fridge unit can hold their class of temperature.

  • New vans: if you’ll need ATP, say so before you order, so the insulated body and fridge unit can be tested and certified from the start.
  • Older vans without a certificate: they have to be tested, and both GOV.UK and the test centre warn that older vehicles are unlikely to pass. If you think you’ll need ATP, sort it when you buy.

How long it lasts

Certificate Lasts
First certificate 6 years
After an in-service retest A further 3 years each time

Both GOV.UK and Cambridge Refrigeration Technology give these periods. Retests can be done at an approved test site or, by arrangement, at your own premises.

What you carry and display

On an international journey you must either carry the certificate in the vehicle or have a certification plate fixed to the body. The vehicle must also show its ATP class letters and the expiry date of the approval on the outside. GOV.UK lists the current test fees; they change, so check there or with the test centre rather than relying on a figure from us.

Our advice

  • UK-only round? You don’t need ATP. Spend the money on the right fridge unit instead. See chiller, freezer or deep freeze?
  • Crossing a border, even occasionally? Tell us before you buy. It changes which van makes sense.
  • A customer asking for ATP on UK work? Ask them to put it in writing, then talk to us.

This is a general guide, not legal advice. For your own journeys, check with the Department for Transport or Cambridge Refrigeration Technology.
