Ford Transit Custom vs Maxus eDeliver 3: which makes the better fridge van?

By GRV 4 Fridge VansUpdated 2 min read

A new white Ford Transit Custom fridge van

The Ford Transit Custom and the Maxus eDeliver 3 (often just called the e3) both come up when people compare vans for chilled deliveries, especially electric ones. They’re quite different vans, though, and the difference matters more once you add a fridge. Here’s how they compare.

The two vans in brief

Ford Transit Custom Maxus eDeliver 3
Size Medium Compact
Fuel Diesel, plug-in hybrid, or fully electric (E-Transit Custom) Fully electric only
Fridge vans on our stock (October 2026) New chillers from £34,995 +VAT, used from £24,995 +VAT None today; we can source and convert one

If you want an electric Maxus closer in size to the Transit Custom, Maxus also makes the mid-size eDeliver 7. We sell the large Maxus Deliver 9 as a chiller and a freezer.

The Transit Custom: the all-rounder

It’s one of the most popular medium vans for a fridge conversion, and we’ve converted at least 80 of them. You can have it with a diesel engine, as a plug-in hybrid, or as the fully electric E-Transit Custom, in L1 and L2 lengths. That choice is its strength: you can match the fuel to your round rather than the other way round.

The eDeliver 3: electric and compact

The eDeliver 3 only comes as an electric van, and it’s smaller than a Transit Custom. For short town rounds with charging at base every night, that can be all you need, with no tailpipe emissions and no London ULEZ charge.

Range with a fridge

Any electric fridge van does less than its brochure range. The insulated lining (50mm for a chiller, 75mm for a freezer) and the fridge unit add weight, and the fridge needs power to hold temperature with the doors opening at every drop. Work out your longest day, including how long the doors are open, before you choose an electric van of any make.

Which should you choose?

Choose the Transit Custom if you want the most choice (diesel, hybrid or electric), more load space, or a fridge van from our stock.

Choose the eDeliver 3 if your round is short, local and fully electric suits you, and a compact van is big enough.
